US President Donald Trump said on Monday that he may suspend help to Jordan and Egypt if countries do not accept Palestinian refugees being relocated to Gaza.
The statement was made a day before the meeting between the Republican and King Abdullah of Jordan, at the White House, on Tuesday (11).
“Yes, maybe, of course, why not?” Trump responded to the Oval Hall when asked if he would hold the American aid. “If they do not accept, I would possibly hold it down, yes.”
Trump’s proposal provides for countries to accept millions of new Palestinian refugees, while the president provides American assistance to Jordan and Egypt.
The Republican has sought a “permanent place” in Jordan and Egypt to Palestinians, although the leaders of both countries quickly rejected the plan last week.
Egypt, which is concerned about an influx of Palestinians destabilizing their region of Sinai, said on Sunday (9) that will summon an “emergency” summit of the Arab League on February 28 in Cairo to discuss “new and dangerous developments” on Palestinian issue .
The president’s comments were made after the statement of Hamas that he would postpone on Saturday’s hostages (15) “until a new warning,” accusing Israel of breaking the ceasefire agreement on Monday (10).
“When I am concerned, if all hostages are not returned until Saturday at 12 noon – I think it’s an appropriate time – I would say, cancel and all bets are canceled and let hell explode,” the president told reporters on Oval Hall.
