United States President-elect Donald Trump spoke at a gala event for the America First Policy Institute at the Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida on Thursday (14). He was introduced to the stage by “Rocky” actor Sylvester Stallone.
Trump celebrated the Republican victory in the White House, the US Senate and the US House of Representatives.
“In my first term, they said ‘he won the election,’ but they always went with ‘he didn’t win the popular vote,’” Trump said. “No one can say that about us anymore,” he added.
He claimed that Republicans “captured the White House, recaptured the Senate and now, as of today, recaptured the House.”
In 2016, Trump won the 270 Electoral College votes needed to win the White House, but lost the popular vote to his Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton.
Names for the next administration
Donald Trump also said on Thursday that the governor of North Dakota, Doug Burgum will be announced this Friday (15) as his chosen one for Secretary of the US Department of the Interior.
Burgum’s name follows some notable selections for positions in recent days, including former Rep. Matt Gaetz for attorney general, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. for secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services and Pete Hegseth for secretary of Defense , between others.
Trump previewed his expectations for Robert Kennedy Jr. in his speech on Thursday: “We want you to present things and ideas that you’ve been talking about for a long time,” he said at the America First Policy Institute gala.
“And I think you’re going to do something unbelievable. No one will be able to do it like you,” he added.
He also hailed the “common sense” of Tulsi Gabbard, the former Democratic congresswoman he recently picked to be his new director of National Intelligence.
“I always looked up to her and looked up to her because she was full of common sense,” Trump said while praising Gabbard.
“And it’s all about common sense,” he added. “I mean, we’re conservatives in this room, but we can understand the other side, but what we really are is people with common sense, and I think that’s why we won with the numbers that we won by.”
Russia and Ukraine War
The US president-elect said on Thursday that his administration will focus on the war between Russia and Ukraine.
“We will work hard in Russia and Ukraine. This has to stop. Russia and Ukraine have to stop,” he said in a speech at the event in Florida while lamenting the deaths in the war.
“Whether it’s soldiers or people sitting in cities, let’s work on it,” he added.
