The president-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, said this Wednesday (4) that he chose Peter Navarro, a loyal ally and former advisor who was arrested for his role in the invasion of the Capitol on January 6, 2021, to to be senior advisor for commerce and manufacturing, resuming a role already played in the Republican’s first government.
In January, Navarro was sentenced to four months in prison after being found guilty of two counts of contempt of Congress for defying a subpoena from a committee investigating the attack by Trump supporters.
The president-elect said in a statement that Navarro’s mission “will be to help implement and communicate Trump’s agendas for manufacturing, tariffs and trade.”
This role is similar to the one Navarro played from 2017 to 2021, as director of the White House National Trade Council, when he strongly defended Trump’s $370 billion worth of tariffs on Chinese imports, as well as national security taxes on steel and aluminum.
Navarro’s nomination appears to round out Trump’s new business team. He has already chosen Wall Street executive Howard Lutnick as Commerce secretary to lead the area, including “additional direct responsibility” for the cabinet representing the country.
Last week, Trump nominated Jamieson Greer to lead the USTR trade agency, another veteran of his trade war with China between 2018 and 2020. Greer is close to Robert Lighthizer, the architect of Trump’s first term negotiation and tariff strategy.
Lighthizer, who had been considered as a potential candidate to head the Treasury or Commerce departments in the new Trump administration, has not appeared for other roles since those positions were filled. He could not immediately be reached for comment on the nominations.
“During my first term, few were more effective or tenacious than Peter in enforcing my two sacred rules: ‘Buy American, Hire American,’” Trump concluded.
