Trump confirms that he offered troops to Mexico to combat cartels

US President Donald Trump confirmed on Sunday that he offered to send US troops to Mexico to help Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum fight drug trafficking.

Sheinbaum released the offer on Saturday (3) and said he refused.

Trump, speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One upon returning from Florida to Washington, commented that he made the offer because drug cartels were “horrible people” that caused thousands of deaths.

Asked if she was disappointed that Sheinbaum refused the offer, Trump replied, “The president of Mexico is a lovely woman, but she is so afraid of the cartels that she can’t even think properly.”

Sheinbaum said he rejected Trump’s offer because “sovereignty is not for sale.”

The comments were made in response to questions about a Wall Street Journal report published May 2, which stated that Trump was pressuring Mexico to allow a deeper US military involvement against drug cartels to combat trafficking through the shared border.

The Mexican president said that the two countries could collaborate, but Mexico would “never accept the military presence of the United States in our territory.”

In addition, Sheinbaum has already taken a firm position on points involving foreign interference in Mexican affairs.

She also argued to keep her “cold head” in the negotiations with Washington amid tensions about immigration, drug trafficking and US tariffs on Mexican products.

On Tuesday (30), Sheinbaum commented that the government analyzes executive orders signed by Trump that relieves tariffs on car automakers, recognizing the action as an advance in the commercial agreement between countries.
