US President Donald Trump has not treated the greenlanders with respect since he expressed the renewed interest in acquiring the mineral-rich arctic village, Greenland prime minister said on Monday (10).
Trump reiterated his interest in acquiring the island during his speech to Congress last Tuesday (4), painting a painting of prosperity and security for the “incredible people” of Greenland, an autonomous territory of the Denmark Kingdom.
The US President reaffirmed this message on a social network publication on the morning of Monday morning, writing: “We will continue to keep them safe, as we do since World War II. We are ready to invest billions of dollars to create new jobs and make them rich. ”
Greenland Prime Minister Mute Egede reported to Danish public broadcaster DR in an interview aired on Monday (10): “We deserve to be treated with respect, and I don’t think the US president has done it recently since he took office.”
“I think the recent things that the US president has done mean that people don’t want to approach as much (from the US) as they would like in the past,” he added.
“We need to draw a line in the sand and strive more (to cultivate relationships with) the countries that show us respect for the future we want to build,” said Egede, in comments transmitted a day before Greenland conducts a general election.
Egede repeatedly said that Greenland, whose population is only 57,000 people, belongs to its people and must decide on their own future.
He supports the country’s total independence.
The island, whose Nuuk capital is closer to New York than the Danish capital Copenhagen, has richness in minerals, oil and natural gas, but development has been slow and its economy remains strongly dependent, for now, fishing as well as annual subsidies of Denmark.
A recent survey indicated that 85% of Greenlandes do not want to become part of the United States, with almost half seeing Trump’s interest as a threat.
