United States President Donald Trump said on Sunday that he does not rule out the use of military force to take Greenland, insisting that the island rich in resources is necessary for national security purposes.
“I don’t rule out it,” Trump told NBC News. “I don’t say I’m going to do that, but I don’t exclude anything,” he added.
“We really need Greenland,” he continued. “Greenland has a very small amount of people, which we will take care of, and we will appreciate them, and all this. But we need it for international security.”
Trump’s desire to attach Greenland raised questions about the future security of the Semi -automated Danish territory, as the US, Russia, and China compete for influence on the Arctic. Trump has repeatedly manifested interest in taking the island by strength or economic coercion, even when Denmark and Greenland reject the idea.
Tension with Canada
Meanwhile, Trump said it was “highly unlikely” that he would use military strength in an attempt to attach Canada, which he has been talking about repeatedly about making the country in the 51st state of the US.
“I don’t see this with Canada. I just don’t see it, I have to be honest with you,” he said.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carnery, who was elected in part due to a wave of anti-trump feeling in the country, is scheduled to visit US President in Washington on Tuesday.
