According to Leite, the former American president failed to effectively explore economic issues, considered by experts as a “weak point” of the current Biden administration.
According to the expert, Trump simply mentioned that there was “highest inflation,” without establishing a clear connection with the policies of the Biden-Harris administration. “Just saying that it was the highest inflation, that it is the result of some kind of policy, does not effectively resonate in terms of criticism of Kamala Harris, because it does not connect,” Leite explained.
Contextualization of inflation
The professor stressed the importance of considering the context of inflation, noting that Americans associate rising prices with the war in Ukraine and the consequences of the pandemic. In addition, Leite highlighted the Biden administration’s efforts to combat inflationary pressure, citing the recent “law of inflation” and the most recent data that point to deflation in food prices.
Kamala Harris, for her part, managed to successfully fend off Trump’s attempts to discredit her on the economic front. The vice president presented objective proposals, such as reducing taxes for new families when purchasing homes and reducing the prices of medicines, especially those linked to chronic diseases such as diabetes.
Performance below expectations
Leite concluded that Trump’s performance fell short of expectations, especially on economic and migration issues, which were considered his strengths. “What was expected to be Donald Trump’s main field of action, the economy and migration, ended up being very ethereal,” said the professor.
On the other hand, Trump’s strategy ended up favoring Kamala Harris, who took the opportunity to present the government’s proposals and defend the actions already implemented by the Biden administration. The debate, therefore, proved to be a missed opportunity for the former president in terms of economic criticism of the current administration.
