Former Republican President Donald Trump on Tuesday described the Russian president’s strategy in Ukraine as “genius”, while criticizing the management of the crisis by his successor Joe Biden.
“I’m exclaiming,” said the real estate mogul during an interview he gave to a conservative podcast.
“He is cunning,” the former president said, referring to Mr Putin, adding that he was “well acquainted with him”.
The closeness of the two men has in the past been the subject of strong criticism against the Republican.
However, Mr. Trump assured that the leader of Russia “would never do in the days of the Trump administration what he is doing now.”
Complaining about the way in which his successor, Joe Biden, handled the issue, he assured that “there would be absolutely no reason” that the crisis unfolding in Ukraine “should even happen”.
Donald Trump, who has strong influence in the Republican Party and is flirting with the idea of running for the White House again in 2024, also called the sanctions imposed by the Biden administration “weak.”
“They are insignificant compared to occupying (part of) a country, areas with a strategic position,” he said.
“Not only is Putin getting what he has always wanted, but he is getting richer thanks to rising oil and gas prices,” he said.
