Trump fined $5,000 for not taking down defamatory tweet

The former president was fined $5,000 Donald Trump for violating a “non-disclosure order” barring him from defaming an employee at the court where he is on trial for fraud in New York.

If the offense is repeated Trump could face heavier fines or even jail time, Judge Arthur Engoron warned. While noting that the breach appears to have been negligent, he added: “Don’t laugh: future violations, intentional or not, will be met with much more severe penalties».

The judge had asked the Republican former president to take down a post in which he called the court clerk a “girlfriend” of Democratic Sen. Chuck Schumer. The staffer’s photo with Schumer and Trump’s comment were taken down from his Truth Social page, but not from his campaign website.

Trump did not attend today’s court hearing. According to US media, his lawyers said the post remained on the website by mistake and asked for an apology from the judge.
