Trump goes to Supreme Court for search and seizure of documents at his home

Former US President Donald Trump has asked the Supreme Court to intervene in the dispute over classified materials that the FBI seized from his property in Mar-a-Lago, Florida.

His emergency request to the Supreme Court is the latest example of the former president seeking to involve ministers in investigations that involve him – at a time when the Supreme Court’s legitimacy in politically explosive cases is under intense scrutiny.

Trump is specifically asking the court to ensure that the more than 100 documents marked as classified form part of the special master review. The request, if granted, could reinforce the former president’s attempt to challenge the search in court and return the documents.

Trump’s emergency appeal to the Supreme Court comes after an appeals court sided with the Justice Department and said the department’s criminal investigation into the documents marked as confidential could continue. The investigation’s use of the records was suspended by a Florida district judge, who granted a request by Trump for a third-party review of materials obtained in the Mar-a-Lago search.

The appeal puts the political spotlight back on the Supreme Court.

Earlier this year, he asked judges to block the release of documents from his White House to US Congressional investigators over attacks on the Capitol. The high court rejected the request.

The Supreme Court, with its current Conservative majority, is already seen by the American public as partisan after a series of controversial decisions this year, including the overthrow of Roe v. Wade, and will likely make the search for Mar-a-Lago even more of an issue in the upcoming midterm parliamentary elections.

Trump named three of the current judges: Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett.
