The government of US President Donald Trump agreed on Friday to allow the sale and possession of devices that allow weapons enthusiasts to convert semi-automatic weapons rifles that can fire as fast as machine guns.
The agreement was announced by the Justice Department to resolve lawsuits filed by Trump’s democratic predecessor, Joe Biden, after his government prohibited certain “forced restart triggers.”
“This Justice Department believes that the 2nd amendment is not a second class right,” said Attorney General Pamela Bondi in a statement, referring to the constitutional right to carry weapons. “And we are happy to end an unnecessary cycle of dispute with an agreement that will increase public safety.”
The agreement was convicted by Vanessa Gonzalez, vice president of government control group and politicians, who said “the Trump government has just effectively legalized the machine guns”.
“Lives will be lost because of their actions,” she said.
In 2022, the department of alcohol, tobacco, firearms and explosives notified the firearms licenses that had determined that some of these provisions were illegal machine guns in accordance with the National Firearm Law.
A year later, the department filed a lawsuit in New York against a company that made and distributed these devices across the country, Rare Breed Triggers, which led to a court decision that prevented it from continuing to sell them.
In trying to prevent the sale of such devices, the Biden government cited the frequency with which AR-15 semi-automatic firearms were used in mass shootings across the country.
