Trump government officials are considering a change that would transfer responsibility for US security interests in Greenland to military command that supervises US internal defense.
The change would highlight the focus of the US president in the strategically important territory that he repeatedly said he wanted to acquire CNN Three sources familiar with the deliberations.
The measure into consideration would take Greenland from the US Command Responsibility Area and place it under the North North Command (Northcom), the sources said.
At first glance, the idea of placing Greenland under Northcom’s authority makes some logical sense, as it is part of the American continent, although it is politically and culturally associated with Europe and is a semi-autonomous territory of Denmark.
Some of the discussions are prior to Trump’s return to office this year, the sources said.
The northern command of the US declined to comment. THE CNN He contacted the Secretary of Defense’s office, as well as with Danish and Greenland authorities for comments.
Still, several American authorities have expressed caution about the measure due to Trump’s repeated insistence that the US “needs” Greenland and its refusal to rule out military action to obtain it.
In an interview with NBC aired last weekend, Trump renewed the threat.
“I don’t rule out,” he said. “I don’t say I’m going to do that, but I don’t rule out anything.”
“We really need Greenland,” said Trump. “Greenland is a very small people, which we will take care of, and we will estimate them, and everything. But we need it for international security.”
The US command of the US is primarily responsible for protecting US territory and currently supervises missions such as the southern border task force.
Trump’s rhetoric also caused great friction with Denmark and Greenland itself.
Putting Greenland under the northern command of the US would separate at least symbolically separate Greenland from Denmark, which would still be supervised by the US European Command.
The Danish authorities are concerned about the message it could convey, suggesting that Greenland is not part of Denmark, one of the sources familiar with deliberations said.
Defenders of the measure pointed out that although there is an American military base at the site and Greenland was seen as a vital striker in the competition with Russia and China by access to Arctic, it is sometimes ignored by the US European command due to its distance from the center of Central Europe, an American authority said.
For US Northcom, however, Greenland is an important point of observation for any potential enemy aircraft that comes from target management to the United States.
The non -confidential version of the US Intelligence Community’s annual evaluation of threats has mentioned Greenland four times in the context of opponents such as China and Russia seeking to expand its influence on the region.
Discussions on Greenland’s transfer to Northcom take place in the midst of another high -level dispute among American and Danish authorities over Greenland.
Foreign Minister Danes Lars Lokke Rasmussen said this week he plans to “summon” the US interim ambassador to Denmark for conversation after a report by the Wall Street Journal stated that Washington ordered US intelligence agencies to increase the spy in Greenland.
They were advised to learn more about Greenland’s independence movement and attitudes towards resource extraction by the United States, the Journal said.
“I read the article on the Wall Street Journal and that worries me a lot, because we didn’t spy on friends,” Rasmussen told Varshovian reporters on Wednesday (7) during an informal EU foreign ministers.
“We will summon the interim US ambassador to a foreign ministry conversation to see if we can confirm this somewhat disturbing information,” Rasmussen added.
