Trump government plans to close almost 30 embassies and consulates abroad

According to an internal document from the US State Department obtained by the CNN the Trump government is considering closing almost 30 embassies and foreign consulates, aiming at significant changes in its diplomatic presence abroad.

The document also recommends reducing US diplomatic missions in Somalia and Iraq – which have been fundamental to anti -terrorism efforts in countries – and the “resizing” of other posts.

The proposed changes take place amid a wide reform in the US, as the Trump government, driven by the Department of Government Efficiency (Doge), supported by Elon Musk, makes drastic efforts to reduce the size of the federal government.

However, it is unclear whether the Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, approved the proposed closures.

The document recommends the closing of 10 embassies and 17 consulates, where many of these posts are located in Europe, Africa, Asia and the Caribbean. These include embassies in Malta, Luxembourg, Lesoto, Republic of Congo, Central African Republic and South Sudan.

The list also includes five consulates in France, two in Germany, two in Bosnia and Herzegovina, one in the United Kingdom, one in South Africa and one in South Korea.

The document proposes that the functions of closed embassies be covered by advanced posts in neighboring countries.

State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce did not comment on the internal document or the drastic court plans in the State Department:

“I would suggest that you check with the White House and the US president while they continue to work on their budget plan and what they submit to Congress,” Bruce said.

“The numbers and what we tend to see are premature or mistaken reports based on leaked documents from some unknown place,” he added.

The government has announced nominations in only two of the recommended closing embassies – Malta and Luxembourg.

THE CNN In March reported that the State Department was mobilizing to close some of the consulates listed in the document.

Embassies and consulates serve as important advanced posts for the State Department.

They provide services such as visa processing and assistance to needy American citizens.

The posts also collect information to send Washington, DC, and authorities say they are an important diplomatic tool.

Most consulates do not have a large workforce.

The document, which claims to be the closing recommendation of the State Department’s Under -Secretary of Administration, notes that “the posts were evaluated based on feedback from regional offices and Inter Agency, consular workload, cost per vacancy in USDH (US direct hiring), facilities and safety classifications”.

Regarding the recommended “resizing”, the document notes that US missions in Japan and Canada “could serve as a model, consolidating consular support in a specialized unit” at higher posts.

The document proposes “Flex -style lightweight jobs and limited teams” in various countries, as well as “double leadership” at multi -missions, such as the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and UNESCO in Paris.
