Trump government suspends new research scholarships for Harvard

The Trump government announced on Monday (5) the cut of all new federal research scholarships for Harvard University. The measure marked the latest management effort to demand changes in university policy in the midst of a conflict on academic freedom, federal funding and campus supervision.

Education Secretary Linda McMahon should send a letter to Harvard Rector Alan Garber on Monday night, stating that “Harvard is not eligible for new federal government scholarships until he shows responsible university management,” according to a high government official.

McMahon should argue that Harvard’s “terrible behavior” is damaging public confidence in higher education, said the employee, and will point out what he described as “serious failures” about anti -Semitism, “continuous discrimination”, “abandonment of rigor and academic excellence” and lack of “diversity of points of view”.

The measure will be specific to finance research scholarships and will not affect federal pell scholarships or student loans financing at this time, the authority has noted, and it is estimated to impact “more than $ 1 billion per year”. The Trump government has already froze $ 2.2 billion in multi -annual federal funding.

The Trump government is willing to negotiate with Harvard to restore funding, the authority said as soon as “(enter) negotiation with the government to ensure that it is in accordance with all federal laws.”

Pressed by CNN Regarding which specific parameters the government is seeking, the authority indicated that there could be a way to accelerate a resolution as Harvard remains under a series of federal government investigations.

“These investigations would have to lead to resolution agreements that made Harvard comply with federal law. They could also open a broader negotiation if they were interested in accelerating it,” the authority said.

The Trump government has promised to revoke the university’s fiscal exemption status and threatened its ability to receive international students if it does not undergo a long list of requirements, including the elimination of diversity, equity and inclusion programs, the prohibition of masks in campus protests, the implementation of changes in merit hiring and admission and the delivery of foreign students disciplinary records.

Harvard, the country’s oldest, oldest university, filed a process for the release of federal research funds. THE CNN contacted the university on Monday about the latest measure of the White House.

Harvard “will not give up his independence or his constitutional rights,” his president said. “Neither Harvard nor any other private university can be dominated by the federal government,” he added.
