Trump intends to label federal employees to facilitate layoffs

United States President Donald Trump said on Friday that his government is ready to change employment ratings of tens of thousands of federal employees, a measure that, according to governance experts, will facilitate more mass mass layoffs.

Trump said on social media that, going forward, government career employees who work with political issues will be classified as a “agenda/career policy.”

This change will ensure that the federal government is finally “run as a company,” said Trump.

Changes via Decree

Trump wants to put in action a decree he signed on the first day of his term on January 20.

The Republican wants to revive the reclassification of civil servants who tried to put into practice at the end of the first term. The so -called “Schedule F” category, as it was reversed by Joe Biden.

The classification of a worker in this new “Schedule F” category will consider him as someone hired for political reasons-and consequently make it easier to fire him.

That is, with this decree, Trump and his nominees to head the federal agencies will have a greater margin of maneuver for the hiring and dismissal of federal civil servants who are considered unfair.

The measure, which had already generated fears among many federal employees by 2020 (before Biden reversed it), now generates new concerns.

Critics point out that the measure politicizes public service and can lead career employees to be removed from their posts for political reasons and replaced by people committed to the new government.

An initial estimate points out that the “Schedule F” category could have been applied to about 50,000 workers, but experts believe the actual number may be higher.

In considering anyone involved in “politics” as part of this new category, the number of people who can be fired increases greatly, because almost everyone in the government stirs politics in one way or another, said Don Moynihan, professor at the University of Michigan Ford School of Public Policy.

The new decree is wide enough for hundreds of thousands of people to be reclassified, Moynihan said before mass layoffs begin.
