Trump is willing to sacrifice democracy to return to power, says Biden

Donald Trump is willing to sacrifice democracy to return to power, said Joe Biden, President of the United States, during a speech this Friday (5) in Pennsylvania, marking the beginning of the Democratic election campaign for the Presidency in 2024.

Biden further claimed that the Republican businessman's campaign is “about him, not you; obsessed with the past, not the future.” As highlighted by the American president, democracy is the most urgent issue of the 2024 elections, and is also the country's “sacred cause”.

“The defense, protection and preservation of democracy will remain a central cause of my Presidency”, he stated. “Your freedom will be in the vote”, he highlighted at another point.

The speech takes place on the eve of the three-year anniversary of the invasion of the United States Capitol by supporters of Donald Trump, who tried to prevent the certification of Biden's victory in the 2020 elections.

The topic was addressed by the president, who highlighted that “for the first time in history, insurrectionists tried to prevent certification”. According to the Democrat, the former president instigated the crowd to invade the Capitol, saying he would be “side by side” with them, but “as always, he left the hard work to others”.

Biden also criticized Trump's failure to act to stop his supporters from continuing the invasion.

“He retreated to the White House while America was attacked from within. The entire nation watched in horror. The whole world watched in disbelief, and Trump did nothing,” he commented.

The American president then highlighted that “Trump exhausted all legal means to reverse the result of the presidential elections, but all paths led him back to the truth: that I won the election and he was a loser”.

“So, he had one last desperate act: the violence of January 6th,” he added.

This Friday's speech (5) marks Biden's first public appearance this year, after spending most of 2023 traveling to official events and raising political funds behind closed doors

Biden will also travel to Charleston, South Carolina, on Monday (8), to speak at Mother Emanuel AME Church, a historically black church, where nine people were killed after a gunman opened fire on a Bible study group in 2015.

“When it comes to white supremacists attacking the historic American city of Charlottesville; of the attack on our nation's capital on January 6; or a white supremacist murdering worshipers at Mother Emanuel nearly nine years ago, America is concerned about the rise in political violence and determined to oppose it,” said Quentin Fulks, deputy campaign manager for Biden-Harris.
