Joseph Tacopina, a lawyer who was part of former United States President Donald Trump's legal team, said this Monday (15) that he will no longer defend the businessman in a criminal case in Manhattan, New York.
Tacopina has stopped defending Trump in a state criminal case in which Trump is accused of falsifying business records over a silent payment to an adult film star before his victory in the 2016 presidential election, the lawyer confirmed to Reuters.
The lawyer also confirmed that he will no longer represent Trump in his appeal of a verdict in a civil case related to writer E. Jean Carroll, who accused him of rape.
In May, a jury awarded $5 million to Carroll after finding Trump liable for sexual harassment and defamation. The former president also declared his innocence in the case.
The New York Times had earlier reported that Tacopina had withdrawn from both cases.
Trump has pleaded not guilty to the charges and will stand trial this year, although the date on which that will occur is uncertain.
Asked about Tacopina's decision, Trump spokesman Steven Cheung told Reuters: “President Trump has the most experienced, qualified, disciplined and overall strong legal team that has ever been assembled, and he continues to fight by the USA and Americans against these false electoral interferences led by the corrupt Joe Biden”.
