US President-elect Donald Trump said his administration is planning to carry out mass deportations of undocumented immigrants “very quickly” after he takes office, reiterating his desire to “get criminals out of our country” as a priority .
Trump said in a phone interview with NBC News on Saturday (18) that he expects deportations of immigrants who entered the country illegally to “start very early, very quickly,” but did not say which cities would be targeted at first.
“It will start very early, very quickly,” he told NBC News. “I can’t say which cities because things are evolving. And I don’t think we want to say which city. You will see it first hand,” he added.
“We have to remove criminals from our country. And I think you would agree with that. I don’t know how anyone could not agree,” the Republican continued.
Trump envisions plans for mass deportations of immigrants dating back to the early days of his presidential campaign.
But in the weeks leading up to his inauguration, the president-elect and his aides suggested the administration could begin taking action within days of Trump taking office.
THE CNN previously reported that the Trump administration will first focus on deporting undocumented immigrants with criminal records in large metropolitan areas such as Chicago, Denver and Washington, DC.
