President Donald Trump seemed to minimize the comments of Secretary of State Marco Rubio, warning that the patience of the United States, for negotiations that will end the Russian War in Ukraine is running out, refusing to establish a specific deadline for the possible closure of negotiations.
Earlier today, Rubio told reporters after meetings with European and Ukrainian authorities in Paris, who, if it is not possible to end the war in Ukraine, the US must abandon efforts and “move on.”
Trump offered a less hard line approach, stating that Rubio is “right,” but projecting more optimism about the prospects for an agreement.
Pressed on a deadline for Washington to withdraw, the Republican said, “There is no specific number of days, but we want to do it quickly.”
He continued, “If, for some reason, one of two parties make it very difficult, let’s just say, ‘You are foolish, you are foolish. You are horrible people,’ and let’s just ignore it – but I hope we don’t have to do that.”
The president has refused to confirm whether he is prepared to completely withdraw from negotiations or to militarily support Ukraine if they failed.
Asked what progress he would need to see to continue the negotiations, Trump said he would “need to see enthusiasm to want to end” on both sides, predicting that he would know “soon.”
“I think we have a very good chance of getting it. It’s coming to the peak now,” he expressed.
