Trump must order abolition of the US Department of Education, says Jornal

United States President Donald Trump is expected to issue an executive order to close the US Department of Education, the Wall Street Journal said on Wednesday (5).

According to the newspaper, the order should leave this Thursday (6). The White House and the department did not immediately respond to requests for comments on Wednesday.

Trump repeatedly asked for the extinction of the department, calling him “big blow.” He proposed to close him in his first term as president, but Congress did not accept.

Republicans have long been trying to reduce the financing and influence of the department. Education Secretary Linda McMahon, confirmed by the Senate on Monday (3), defended the plan to abolish the agency.

Department advocates say it is crucial to keep public education standards and accuse Republicans to try to promote for profit education.

Immediate closure of the agency can stop dozens of billions of dollars in help to schools and tuition assistance for college students.

Trump said last month that he wanted the department to be closed immediately, but acknowledged that he would need congressional support, which determines his funding, and teachers’ unions.

McMahon told senators that he dissolves the department would require Congress action, and repeatedly promised that federal funding for school appropriate to help school districts and low -income students would continue.

Trump and Elon Musk tried to dismantle government programs and institutions such as the US agency for international development without congressional approval, but abolishing the education department would be its first closure of an office agency.

The department oversees about 100,000 public schools and 34,000 private schools in the United States, although more than 85% of public school financing comes from state and local governments.

Instead, it provides federal subsidies for schools and needy programs, including money to pay teachers of children with special needs, finance art programs and replace outdated infrastructure.

It also supervises the $ 1.6 trillion in student loans maintained by tens of millions of Americans who cannot afford the university in cash.

Under the government of Joe Biden, Republicans particularly criticized the department about the forgiveness of student loans and policies related to diversity, equity and inclusion programs.
