Trump praises “strong past” by the rebel leader of Syria

United States President Donald Trump again praised Syria’s interim leader Ahmed al-Sharaa on Thursday, characterizing the former jihadist who became president as someone with a “strong past.”

“I met the new leader in the country, and he has a strong past… I think he will be a great representative, and we’ll see,” Trump said at a round table with business leaders at Qatar, allegedly with the goal of highlighting new investments in Boeing.

The comments of the US President emphasize his frequent efforts to publicly praise and admire authoritarian leaders.

“You’ll have to have a solid past to achieve this. You can’t – you can’t be a weak person. If you’re a weak person, we would just be wasting time. So he’s a strong guy, and I thought he was good, and let’s see what happens. But let’s give him a chance to fight, removing the sanctions.”

He announced on Tuesday that he plans to suspend sanctions to Syria after the fall of the Assad regime last year.

Trump and Al-Sharaa held a crucial meeting on Wednesday (14) in Riade, the capital of Saudi Arabia, while the US exploits the possibility of normalizing diplomatic relations with Damascus.

Until recently, Al-Sharaa had a reward of $ 10 million for his head.

Once known for his militant war name, Abu Mohammed Al-Jolani, he was included in the list of specially designated US global terrorists in 2013 for leading the al-Qaeda branch in Syria.

But in 2016, he separated from the group, according to the US Naval Analysis Center.
