Trump promises “serious consequences” if Hamas does not release hostages by inauguration

The president-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, said this Monday (16) that he had a “very good conversation” with the Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, about the war in Gaza. The Republican reiterated that if Hamas does not release the hostages by his inauguration, which will be on January 20, “there will be serious consequences.”

Trump reaffirmed the promise during a press conference in Palm Beach, Florida.

“As you know, I warned that if these hostages do not return home by that date, ‘there will be serious consequences’”, he highlighted.

According to Israeli information, Hamas killed 1,200 people and kidnapped more than 250, including dual Israeli-American citizens, during the October 7, 2023 attack.

More than 100 hostages were released through negotiations or Israeli military rescue operations. Of the 100 still detained in Gaza, around half are believed to be alive.

US President Joe Biden recently sent more advisers to the region to try to reach a ceasefire agreement.

Understand the conflict in the Gaza Strip

Israel has carried out intense airstrikes in the Gaza Strip since last year, after Hamas invaded the country and killed 1,200 people, according to Israeli counts. In addition, the group holds dozens of hostages.

Hamas does not recognize Israel as a state and claims Israeli territory for Palestine.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has repeatedly promised to destroy Hamas’ military capabilities and recover people detained in Gaza.

In addition to the air offensive, the Israeli Army carries out land incursions into Palestinian territory. This caused much of Gaza’s population to be displaced.

The UN and several humanitarian institutions have warned of a catastrophic humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip, with a lack of food, medicine and the spread of diseases.

The Israeli population is constantly protesting against Netanyahu, accusing the prime minister of failing to reach a ceasefire agreement so that the hostages can be released.
