Trump reiterates that Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon on the eve of negotiations

President Donald Trump reiterated this Friday (18) that he does not want Iran to have a nuclear weapon before a second round of high-risk negotiations between the United States and Iran this weekend.

“I am in favor of simply preventing Iran from having a nuclear weapon. They can’t have a nuclear weapon. I want Iran to be big, prosperous and fantastic,” Trump told reporters when asked if he would be open to allowing Tehran to maintain a nuclear program.

He added, “With Iran, they can’t have a nuclear weapon, and if you have a nuclear weapon, you’ll be very unhappy. You’ll be very unhappy.”

Trump government officials hesitated to impose rigid rules on Iran, with US Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth, asking Tehran to completely dismantle his entire nuclear program, not just the arms component.

The envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, who represented the US last weekend in indirect negotiations with the country, said any final agreement would require Iran to “interrupt and eliminate its nuclear enrichment and weaponry program.”

The American leader, who recently warned that Washington will resort to military attacks with Israel’s support against Iranian nuclear facilities if Tehran could not reach an agreement with his interlocutors, withdrew the US from the Agreement with Iran negotiated by the Obama government in 2018.

Witkoff is expected to meet Iran, mediated by Omanese authorities on Saturday (19) in Rome.
