Trump removes Elise Stefanik’s nomination to represent USA in the UN

United States President Donald Trump said on Thursday that he removed his nomination to the United Nations representative because Republicans need to keep its small majority in the House.

Republican congressman Elise Stefanik is an ally near Trump and was chosen by the president for the post in the UN less than a week after her election in November.

“It is essential that we keep all republican chairs in Congress,” Trump said in a social media post. “With a very tight majority, I don’t want to risk that no one else competes in Elise’s chair.”

Republicans currently have a majority of 218 to 213 in the House of Representatives, where there are four empty chairs.

Senate Foreign Committee President James Risch told reporters on Thursday: “I was notified by the White House. She was taken.”

A Stefanik spokesman did not immediately respond to a comment.

“There are others who can do a good job in the United Nations,” wrote Trump.

Trump said in February that the UN has “great potential and … we will continue to accompany it, but they need to get back.” The UN reacted at the time, saying that Secretary-General António Guterres had worked tirelessly to implement reforms.

Since returning to office on January 20, Trump has interrupted US involvement with the UN Human Rights Council, has extended the suspension of financing to Palestinian Assistance Agency Unrwa and ordered a revision of the UNSCO Cultural Agency, UNESCO. He also announced US plans to abandon the Paris Climate Agreement and the World Health Organization.
