United States President Donald Trump announced on Friday that he would return to Washington after ending his trip to the Gulf.
“We will see what happens to Russia and Ukraine,” he said, referring to the negotiations between Russia and Ukraine that are taking place in Türkiye.
Trump said he’ll meet Russian President Vladimir Putin, “as soon as we can set up a meeting.”
Russian and Ukrainian negotiators are gathered in Istanbul on Friday (16) for their first peace negotiations in more than three years, while being pressured by US President Donald Trump to end Europe’s most deadly conflict since World War II.
The meeting at Dolmabahçe Palace is a sign of diplomatic progress among the conflict parties, which had not been personally found since March 2022.
A meeting between Turkish, American and Ukrainian authorities in Istanbul took place before the meeting with Russia.
But the expectations of an advance, already low, were even more shaken on Thursday (15), when Trump stated that there would be no movement without a meeting between him and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
