Trump says he did not expect Putin’s presence in negotiations with Ukraine

United States President Donald Trump said on Thursday that he was not disappointed with the news that Vladimir Putin will not participate in the negotiations about the Ukraine War in Turkey, claiming not to expect Putin to participate in the conversations suggested by the Russian leader himself.

Russian government spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Putin would not participate in direct negotiations, initially proposed by him in response to the ultimatum of ceasefire or sanctions given to Moscow by Ukraine European allies on Saturday (10).

In a later publication on social networks, Trump asked Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who “have the meeting, now !!!”

On Thursday, the American leader declared reporters in Qatar who “did not predict” Putin’s participation, when asked if he was disappointed with the absence of the Russian president in the negotiations.

“No, I didn’t predict (which Putin would). In fact, I said, ‘Why would he go if I won’t?’ Because I wouldn’t. I wasn’t planning to go.

He continued, “I didn’t think it was possible putin to go if I wasn’t there.”

The Republican repeatedly suggested the possibility of traveling to Türkiye to participate in the negotiations, which would have harmed his trip to the Middle East.

“I was thinking of going,” he said on Thursday (15), in what could be an attempt to save the situation, but once again kept the option open:

“If something happened, I would go on Friday, if it were appropriate.”
