United States President Donald Trump said on Friday that he plans to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin, “as soon as we can set up a meeting.”
Trump spoke before conversations between Russian and Ukrainian authorities in Türkiye, the first face -to -face meeting since the first weeks of the war.
But the US has minimized hopes of a breakthrough, and the American leader himself said “nothing” will happen in Ukraine until he and Putin meet.
“I think it’s time to just do that. I said, you know, everyone said that Putin and Zelensky would leave. And I said: If I don’t, I guarantee that Putin won’t, and he wasn’t. The president said he was not surprised by the cancellation of the participation of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the negotiations on Thursday (15).
“He didn’t attend because he heard Putin wouldn’t,” he said.
Trump has repeatedly urged Russia and Ukraine to get involved in peace negotiations and repeatedly considered the possibility of traveling to Türkiye to personally participate in the negotiations.
But when it was clear that Putin would not go, the Republican seemed to try to save the appearances.
