United States President Donald Trump said the US is “exploring the normalization of relationships” with Syria after an important meeting on Wednesday (14) with the interim president of Syria, Ahmad al-Sharaa.
“We are currently exploring the normalization of relations with the new government of Syria,” Trump said during a speech at the Gulf Cooperation Council in Riyadh, a day after announcing plans to suspend severe sanctions to Damascus.
During the meeting, according to a statement from the White House, the US President offered Al-Sharaa a series of guidelines, including the signing of Abraham’s agreements to normalize relations with Israel, saying “all foreign terrorists to leave Syria”, deporting “Palestinian terrorists”, helping the United States to prevent the resurgence of the Islamic State and assuming the retention of the arrest of IS Northeast of Syria.
Al-Sharaa and Trump were accompanied by Saudi heir prince Mohammed Bin Salman, who personally attended, and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who attended by phone.
The Republican said on Tuesday that both the heir and Erdogan prince were fundamental in his decision on the sanctions.
The suspension of sanctions to Syria, said the president, “gives them a chance of greatness – the sanctions were really paralyzing, very powerful.”
He continued, “Anyway, it won’t be easy. So that gives them a good and strong chance, and it was an honor for me to do so.”
The leaders also discussed the conflict between Israel and Hamas and the Russian War in Ukraine, according to the statement.
