President-elect Donald Trump said on Monday (16) that he would talk to Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky about ending the war in Ukraine, saying he was concerned about the images of the carnage of conflict.
“This has to stop,” Trump said at a news conference at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida.
Trump did not give a direct answer when asked whether he believed Ukraine should cede territory to Russia as part of a negotiated deal.
Trump said much of the disputed territory had been reduced to rubble and would take a century to recover.
“There are cities where there is not a building standing, it is a demolition site,” he said.
He also said he saw photos of battlefields littered with bodies that reminded him of some of the horrific scenes of the American Civil War of 1861-1865.
Trump has said he would like to bring a quick end to the war, but has been cautious on the details. He told Time magazine in an interview published last week that he had a “very good plan” to help, but that if he reveals it now “it will almost become a useless plan.”
