President-elect Donald Trump told supporters this Sunday (22) that the owner of X, Elon Musk, could not be president of the United States, because he “was not born in the country”.
“But no, he’s not going to be president, I can tell you that. And I’m safe, do you know why? He can’t. He was not born in this country,” Trump said.
The businessman was born in South Africa and founded the companies Tesla, an electric car manufacturer, SpaceX, which operates in the space travel segment, and the Boring Company, an infrastructure and construction company.
The speech comes after Trump’s opponents suggested that the billionaire was “taking control of the presidency”. Musk “is not taking the presidency,” said the Republican.
Musk and Trump overturned a bipartisan agreement this week that provided for continued government funding, generating confusion in the US Congress and a near paralysis of the federal machinery.
Congress, however, passed the spending bill early on Saturday (21) that averted a government shutdown ahead of the country’s busy holiday travel season.
The final version eliminated some provisions championed by Democrats, who accused Republicans of bowing to pressure from an unelected billionaire who has no experience in government.
Trump has tasked Musk, the world’s richest person, with leading a budget-cutting task force, but he will have no official position in Washington.
