Donald Trump said Saturday (14) that the city of Springfield, Ohio, “has been taken over by illegal immigrants” and that he is unaware of the bomb threats the city has received since he and other Republicans spread false claims about Haitian immigrants eating pets.
“I don’t know what happened with the bomb threats. I know it was taken over by illegal immigrants, and that was a terrible thing that happened. Springfield was a beautiful city and now they’re going through hell,” the former US president said while visiting the Las Vegas Police Protective Association.
The claim went viral a few weeks ago and was promoted by prominent Republicans nationally, including Trump and his running mate, Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance.
Local authorities have repeatedly tried to quell the rumor, and the city has said there are no official records of animal abuse “by individuals in the immigrant community.”
As reported by CNN Springfield City Hall was forced to close due to a bomb threat on Thursday (12).
Two elementary schools were also ordered evacuated on Friday (13) “based on information received from the Springfield Police Division.”
Trump has previously said the “real threat is what’s happening at our border,” not the bomb threats in Springfield.
The city is home to 12,000 to 15,000 immigrants, and the Haitian immigrants are there legally as part of a parole program that allows citizens and legal residents to apply to bring their family members from Haiti to the United States.
Trump’s comments on Saturday were the latest in a series of inflammatory rhetoric about immigrants this week.
