President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that the US will stop bombarding the Houthis in Yemen after the group agreed to stop interrupting important navigation routes in the Middle East.
At a meeting at the Oval Hall with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Trump announced that the Houthis said they no longer want to fight, but gave no more details about the message.
“They said, Please don’t bombard us anymore and we won’t attack your ships,” said Trump.
There was no immediate response from the Houthis.
Houthis have shot Israel and ships in the Red Sea since Israel began their military offensive against Hamas in Gaza following the deadly attack of the Palestinian group against Israel on October 7, 2023.
The US president said Washington will believe in the rebels’ word that they will no longer bombard ships.
The tensions have been high since the beginning of the war in Gaza, but have increased even more since a Hethis missile fell near the Israel Ben Gurion airport on Sunday, causing Israeli air strikes in the port of Hodeidah, Yemen, on Monday.
The Israeli army held an air strike at the Iêmen main airport in Saná on Tuesday.
