Trump “sells” the Pacific – opens a protected zone for fishing because “the US must dominate seafood”

In a surprise decision, Donald Trump has announced that he is allowing commercial fishing again in one of the largest marine protected areas in the world, a vast area in the Pacific that hosts coral people, sea turtles and whales. The former US president signed an executive decree to open the Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument, located about 1,200 kilometers west of Hawaii. The area was created by George Bush in 2009 and expanded significantly by Barack Obama in 2014, reaching almost 500,000 square miles. According to a report by the New York Times, Trump presented the decision as part of a wider plan to make America “the dominant world leader in the seafood”, stressing that previous governments had deprived their “Pacific Communities”.
