Trump team talks to other countries about deporting Venezuelans

US President-elect Donald Trump’s team handling the transition of power is in ongoing discussions with other countries regarding the deportation of Venezuelans, new national security adviser Mike Waltz said in an interview with CBS News this Sunday (19).

Venezuelans make up a large portion of border crossings, and for years the US was unable to deport them due to tense diplomatic relations between the US and Venezuela. Mexico previously agreed to host some for a period of time. During Joe Biden’s administration, authorities sent Venezuelan immigrants to Colombia if they had already resided there.

The Trump administration may follow a similar path. Waltz said Sunday that the U.S. could deport Venezuelans to “several countries that will agree to receive them.”

“First, I think they will be very aggressive. Second, they go after these criminal gangs that are terrorizing our cities, particularly MS-13, and particularly Tren De Aragua, our communities are asking for this. Our neighbors are asking for this,” Waltz declared on “Face the Nation”.

Waltz was then pressed: “Tren De Aragua is Venezuelan. You cannot deport to Venezuela. So where are you going to send these?”

“Well, we are in a series of conversations with several countries that will agree to receive them,” Waltz responded.
