Trump: The US does not need to reach 5% on NATO defense spending – ‘We have been supporting alliance for so long’

Donald Trump told reporters that the US does not need to fulfill its 5% target in NATO defense spending, as America has long supported the alliance. Politico wrote that the US president made the above statement a few days before meeting with other NATO leaders in the Netherlands. “I don’t think we should do it, but I think they should do it,” he said, answering a question about the 5% goal of defense spending, while the US covers 3.4%. “We support NATO for so long … So, I don’t think we should, but I think the NATO countries must, of course,” he added.
