The former Republican President of the United States Donald Trump, reacting to reports that the New York State Attorney’s Office has launched a criminal investigation against the Trump Organization, the tycoon’s business group, he stated today that “he accepts an unjust attack and abuse”.
“There is nothing more corrupt than an investigation that desperately seeks a crime,” Trump said in a statement, adding that “we will overcome any attempt to prosecute.”
Yesterday, the New York State Attorney’s Office announced that it had informed the Trump Organization that the investigation against him has now taken on a criminal character and is no longer a matter of civil law.
Manhattan Attorney General Cyrus Vance, who was elected with the Democrats, has been investigating Trump’s business dealings before taking over the presidency of the United States for more than two years.
Cyrus Vance’s investigation began when former lawyer and Trump aide Michael Cohen was revealed to have paid before the 2016 election two women who said they had sex with the tycoon to buy their silence.
The investigation has accelerated since Trump lost the November presidential election to Democratic successor Joe Biden.
Leticia James, the head of the New York prosecutor’s office, also a Democrat, is leading a separate investigation into false real estate value statements by the real estate businessman’s group to secure loans and tax breaks.
“The Attorney General of New York literally launched a campaign against Donald Trump before he even knew anything about me,” the former president told James.
