Trump to hold Florida rally as VP suspense grows

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump will hold a rally at his golf club near Miami on Tuesday (9), just days before he selects a running mate to take the stage with him at the party’s national convention next week.

Tuesday’s event in Doral, Florida, will be followed by a rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday (13). Both will be closely watched for any hints — or announcements — about who Trump will pick for vice president.

Ohio Senator JD Vance and Florida Senator Marco Rubio are the leading contenders to join Trump on the Republican ticket, people familiar with the matter told Reuters.

The decision will come at a time of turmoil for Democrats after 81-year-old President Joe Biden’s disastrous debate against Trump on June 27, which led to growing calls within his party for him to step aside to make way for a younger candidate.

In an interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity on Monday night (8), Trump was asked if Rubio, Vance and Burgum, as well as South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott, were on his list.

“The names that you mentioned, absolutely are under consideration,” Trump responded, adding that he wanted to see how the mess in the Democratic Party plays out “because, you know, it could make a difference.”

Trump said he would likely make a decision “sometime before” or during the Republican National Convention, which begins July 15.

Trump will use the Doral rally to blame Biden for inflation and criticize his immigration policies, in part by highlighting cases of migrants who entered the country illegally and committed violent crimes, according to a Trump campaign statement.

Ford O’Connell, a Republican operative in Florida, said Trump would likely let the disarray in the Democratic Party and the pressure on Biden dominate media coverage rather than divert attention in Doral by announcing who he wants to be vice president.

“If you’re Trump, it doesn’t get much better than that. And the key is to just keep talking about inflation, border closures, crime and instability overseas,” said O’Connell, who worked with Trump during the 2020 campaign.

On Saturday (13), Trump will travel to Pennsylvania for an afternoon rally in Butler, outside Pittsburgh. Trump won the state in 2016 but lost to Biden in 2020, and a victory there could be critical for the winner of November’s election.
