Former US President Donald Trump took confidential information to his Florida home after leaving the White House, the US National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) said in a letter to Congress on Friday. over 15 recently retrieved document boxes.
The administration said it had informed the Justice Department, which will handle any investigation.
“NARA identified items marked as sensitive national security information inside the boxes,” David Ferriero, United States archivist, said in a letter to Democratic Representative Carolyn Maloney, chair of the House oversight committee.
Maloney’s committee is reviewing Trump’s treatment of records, who left office in January 2021.
“These new revelations deepen my concern about former President Trump’s blatant disregard for federal records laws and the potential impact on our historical record,” Maloney said in a statement.
“The National Archives did not ‘find’ anything, they received, upon request, presidential records in a common and routine process to ensure the preservation of my legacy and in accordance with the Presidential Records Act,” Trump said in a statement.
“If it was anyone other than ‘Trump,’ there would be no story here,” he added.
Ferriero’s letter also said that some White House officials were conducting official business using unofficial email accounts that were not copied or forwarded to official accounts and that he was in the process of obtaining some of those missing records.
The Washington Post reported last week that some of the documents taken to the former president’s home were marked confidential, which could intensify the legal pressure Trump or his aides may face.
The Presidential Records Act requires the preservation of memos, letters, notes, emails, faxes, and other written communications relating to a president’s official duties.
Claiming executive privilege, Trump has filed a lawsuit, but to no avail, to prevent the release of records of his White House tenure, including to the House select committee investigating the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol by US supporters. ex-president.
