US President-elect Donald Trump and his family left West Palm Beach, Florida, this Saturday (18) for the presidential inauguration in Washington, DC, on Monday (20).
Trump, who normally travels aboard his private jet, boarded an official US Air Force jet sent by President Joe Biden. His wife Melania, daughter Ivanka and husband Jared accompany him on the plane.
The president-elect is expected to arrive in Washington on Saturday night for a celebration marking his return to power.
The Republican is expected to immediately head to his golf club in Virginia, outside Washington, where a crowd of about 500 guests will watch a fireworks display and musical acts including Leo Days, an Elvis impersonator, and the American tenor Christopher Macchio.
Trump, 78, is expected to hold a rally with supporters inside the Capital One arena in downtown Washington this Sunday (19), on the eve of his inauguration, as well as a post-inauguration event this Monday (20) afternoon.
The Republican’s inauguration is scheduled to take place at 2 pm Brasília time.
A cold weather forecast for Monday prompted Trump to move ceremonies on the facade of the U.S. Capitol building inside the Capitol rotunda, and the parade down Pennsylvania Avenue to the Capital One arena.
It will be the first time since Ronald Reagan’s second inauguration in January 1985 that the event will be moved indoors.
Most of the more than 220,000 ticketed guests expected to watch from the U.S. Capitol grounds will not be able to view the inauguration inside the building. Only a fraction will be able to fit inside the 20,000-seat Capital One arena, where the U.S. inauguration will be broadcast and performers and parade participants are expected to perform.
Asked Saturday how they would manage the crowds of ticket holders for Trump’s inauguration who wouldn’t fit into the Capitol Rotunda or Capital One stadium, the Secret Service referred the question to event organizers.
Trump’s inauguration committee did not respond to requests for more information about the event at the Capital One arena on Saturday.
When he returns to the White House on Monday afternoon, Trump is expected to begin signing some of the dozens of executive orders and directives he has planned to crack down on illegal immigration, boost U.S. energy production and other priorities.
Trump, whose first term lasted from 2017 to 2021, refused to attend the inauguration of Biden, who defeated him in 2020. He left Washington for Florida before the ceremony, promising to “come back somehow.”
Two weeks earlier, his supporters stormed the US Capitol on January 6, 2021, seeking to delay lawmakers from certifying Biden’s victory.
