In a scenario of international tension, Donald Trump seeks to mediate the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, trying to reconcile the divergent interests of Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelensky. The situation is highlighted in a week considered decisive for negotiations.
The announcement of a three-day ceasefire by Russia, coinciding with the victory day celebrations on May 9, opens a window of opportunity for dialogues, says Alberto Pfeifer, coordinator of the USP international strategy analysis group. This Russian military holiday is of great importance, mobilizing the population in honor of the combatants who lost their lives in past conflicts.
Conflicting demands
On the Ukrainian side, the main requirement is the restoration of territorial control and energy sources, a scenario that seems distant at the present time. Russia maintains its schedule focused on several points, such as the recognition of Crimea as Russian territory; acceptance of the Russian domain over four Ukrainian east regions; the impediment of Ukraine entry into NATO; the demilitarization of Ukraine; the control of energy sources; and respect for Russian culture, language and religion within the Ukrainian territory.
Pfeifer explains that the reconciliation of these guidelines proves to be a significant challenge. However, Trump shows optimism, betting on the performance of his emissaries, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, to find a solution that satisfies all parties involved.
GLOBAL IMPACT AND FRONT ASIANIC
The conflict between Russia and Ukraine has branches that go beyond the European scenario. China’s participation, offering economic and military support to Russia, adds complexity to the situation. In addition, military cooperation between Russia and North Korea, which began in June 2024, brought new elements to the conflict.
The presence of North Korean troops in the front of Kursk has established an unprecedented proximity between Russia and North Korea. This alliance has the potential to affect balance in the Asian region, especially considering the persistent tension between the Koreas.
Pfeifer also points out that the next few weeks will be crucial to determine the course of negotiations and the possible rebalancing of the global forces.
