The government of US President Donald Trump called for the Supreme Court of the United States on Thursday to intervene in his attempt to revoke the temporary protection status of more than 300,000 Venezuelan immigrants, which would pave the way for his US deportations.
The Justice Department requested that judges suspend the decision of a federal judge who prevented internal security secretary Kristi Noem from ending the temporary legal status previously granted to some Venezuelans.
“While the decision is in force, (Noem) must allow hundreds of thousands of Venezuelan citizens to remain in the country, despite their founded conclusion that this is’ contrary to the national interest’”Write lawyers from the Justice Department in judicial documents.
Temporary Protection Status (TPS) is a humanitarian program available to people who cannot safely return to their home country due to natural disasters, armed conflicts or other extraordinary events.
The government’s request was made in the context of a group filed by a group that includes several Venezuelans living in the US and the National TPS alliance, an organization that defends immigrants who received temporary protection status.
The Supreme Court determined that the plaintiffs respond to the government’s request until May 8.
The lawsuit disputes Noem’s decision in February to end TPS designation to Venezuela, reversing a US government measure under former President Joe Biden, who had extended these protections to Venezuelan citizens. The protections have been in force since 2021.
