United States President Donald Trump’s nominee to lead NASA will tell senators on Wednesday (9) that the agency will prioritize an astronaut mission to Mars. He should also note that most US space programs are above budget and late.
“We will prioritize the sending of American astronauts to Mars. Along the way, we will inevitably have the ability to return to the moon and determine the scientific, economic and national security benefits to maintain a presence on the lunar surface,” said Jared Isaacman.
Isaacman also said in his statement that late programs and above NASA’s budget are “discouraging.”
The statement was made in a written testimony of the 42-year-old billionaire businessman for his confirmation hearing from the US Senate Commerce, Science and Transport Committee, scheduled for Wednesday.
Isaacman told the Senate team last week to bring humans to the moon before China sends its own astronauts there is a national imperative.
His comments calmed some concerns that NASA’s multibillionaire lunar effort could be overthrown for the focus of Trump and Spacex CEO Elon Musk on Mars as one of the main destinations for US astronauts.
NASA’s Lunar Artemis program was created by Trump in its first presidential term as an effort to accelerate US return to the moon, which would be used as a test field for any further missions for Mars.
Isaacman’s written testimony raises questions about whether his prioritization of Mars would affect NASA’s existing lunar missions or would be a reformulation of the program to give Mars a more central emphasis on space agency strategy.
The position of the nominee billionaire about the program should be an important topic during his Senate audience on Wednesday.
The agency has compromised billions of dollars to its lunar program, involving US allies and relying strongly on dozens of private companies-including Musk Spacex-who are eyeing a future lunar market.
But in his second term, Trump focused on Mars in public comments, while Musk, who spent $ 250 million in support of Trump’s presidential campaign and pressed by Isaacman’s appointment, considers the moon a distraction from his ultimate goal of sending teams to the red planet.
