Donald Trump’s attempt to separate Russia from China has been a recurring theme since January, according to the reserve colonel Leonardo Mattos Geopolitics Professor at the Naval War School. In an interview with CNN Mattos analyzed the president’s strategy and its implications for the current geopolitical scenario.
According to the expert, Trump’s plan to “take Russia out of the lap of China” was virtually impossible. “The relationship between Russia, especially between Putin and Xi Jinping, is very strong,” explained Mattos, highlighting the solidity of the alliance between the two countries.
Faced with the unfeasibility of his initial plan, Trump seems to have changed his approach. Mattos cited two recent movements that indicate this change: the signing of a critical mineral agreement with Ukraine and the approval of a new supply of weapons to the country.
The analyst also highlighted a recent Trump maneuver who would have pressured Vladimir Putin. When Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky initially refused to attend a meeting in Istanbul if Russia did not comply with the ceasefire, Trump used social networks to encourage Zelensky’s presence at the meeting.
“I think in this movement Trump pressed Putin, he put pressure on Putin and Putin got this image that he is the problem, that he doesn’t want to make peace,” Mattos said.
Divergent interests and international support
The expert stressed that the interests of Russia and Ukraine in the conflict are divergent. While Russia seeks to move forward in the east front, Ukraine sees the ceasefire as an opportunity to rear and receive a new supply of weapons from the United States.
Mattos also remembered Europe’s alignment with Zelensky, reinforcing help to Ukraine. This international support adds another layer of complexity to the already intricate geopolitical scenario involving Russia, China, the United States and Europe.
