United States Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Wednesday that a mineral agreement between Ukraine and the US would give the European country a postwar “security shield”.
In turn, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he hopes to reach an agreement later this week.
Trump did not say if he will continue with military aid to Ukraine, but stressed that he wants $ 500 billion in Ukrainian rare land minerals.
Zelensky told reporters after meeting Bessent that the Americans had a first draft agreement and that Kiev will study him.
In addition, he pointed out that he expects the understanding to be closed at the Munich Security Conference from February 14 to 16.
“We had a productive and constructive conversation. For me, the issue of safety guarantees for Ukraine is very important, and we talk about minerals in general, ”commented Zelensky, who should meet US Vice President Jd Vance in Munich.
Minerals are part of “Greater Peace Agreement”
The US Treasury Secretary has considered reporters that the mineral agreement is part of a “greater peace agreement than Trump has in mind,” adding that his first visit to Ukraine showed that war is a top priority for the Trump government.
“By increasing our economic commitment through a partnership with the government and the people of Ukraine, this will provide – when this conflict is over – a long -term security shield for all Ukrainians,” he said.
Zelensky emphasized during the war that Ukraine needs its Western allies to provide security guarantees that prevent Russia from regrusing itself and launching another invasion in the future.
The Ukrainian President commented that he could only discuss the issue of US security guarantees to Ukraine directly with Trump.
