Truss takes over as UK prime minister after meeting with Elizabeth II

Boris Johnson was also at Balmoral Castle, where he presented his resignation to Queen Elizabeth II. This is Johnson’s final moment in office and ends his weeks-long farewell “tour”.

Official confirmation has come from Buckingham Palace that the Queen has accepted Johnson’s resignation.

“The Honorable Representative Boris Johnson had an audience with the Queen this morning and tendered his resignation as Prime Minister and First Lord of the Treasury, which Her Majesty was pleased to accept,” the Palace statement reads.
