The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkey, Mevlüt Tsavousogluand his Armenian counterpart Ararat Mirzoyan met today for talks in southern Turkey and the former said their meeting was very productive and constructive.
Tsavousoglou made statements next to Mirzoyan after the two met for half an hour in a diplomatic forum in Antalya. THE Turkey has not had diplomatic or trade relations with Armenia since the 1990s, but held talks in January in a first attempt to re-establish relations following a 2009 peace deal, which was never ratified.
The two countries are at the “knife” for several issues, especially for the 1.5 million Armenians that the Armenia says they were killed in 1915 by the Ottoman Empire, from which modern Turkey emerged.
Armenia claims the 1915 killings are genocide. Turkey acknowledges that many Armenians living in the Ottoman Empire were killed in clashes with Ottoman forces during World War I, but denies the numbers and denies the killings were systematic and genocidal.
The two countries have said the January talks were “positive and constructive”, creating the prospect of a possible resumption of relations and the opening of borders.
Tensions flared up again in 2020 during the Nagorno-Karabakh war. Turkey has accused Armenian forces of possessing land belonging to Azerbaijan. Turkey has since called for an approach, as it seeks to increase its regional influence.
