It will undoubtedly take several decades to “restore trust” between Western countries and Russia, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoλουlu said today.
“Reconstruction of all this will take time. It will probably take decades to restore confidence,” Tsavousoglou said, adding that “we are watching the start of a new Cold War.”
NATO member and ally of Ukraine – to which it has handed over drones – Turkey has been trying to mediate between Moscow and Kyiv since the start of the conflict in Ukraine and has refused to align with Western sanctions aimed at Russia, anxious to maintain an open line with the Kremlin.
“Despite developments in the field, we believe that there remains room for diplomacy,” he added at a joint news conference with his Hungarian counterpart Peter Sigiarto in Ankara.
Tsavousoglu said “urgent measures must be taken to stop the fire” between Kyiv and Moscow.
Turkey has twice hosted direct talks between the two sides, on March 10th at ministerial level in Antalya (south) and on March 29th in Istanbul.
The Turkish Foreign Minister also said that Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan will have a telephone conversation with Israeli President Isaac Herzog today, after the Israeli interventions against Palestinian worshipers in the Al Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem last week.
On Friday, at least 152 Palestinians were injured in conflicts with the Israeli police against demonstrations within the Mosque of Mosmic Police, the most recent outbreak of violence that has caused fears of slipping in a wider conflict.
“We have already made our statements and are continuing our contacts in response to the unacceptable attacks by the Israeli security forces in the West Bank and Al Aqsa,” Mevlüt Çavuşoλουlu told a news conference in Ankara.
“Our president will have a telephone conversation with Israeli President Isaac Herzog as well,” he added.
On Sunday, Erdogan told his Palestinian counterpart Mahmoud Abbas that he condemned the Israeli “intervention in the faithful” at the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem and the threats to his “regime or spirit.” Turkey and Israel have been working hard lately to restore relations.
Turkey and Israel, which are rivals in the region, ousted their ambassadors in 2018 and often exchange accusations about the conflict, Turkish support for the Hamas militant group and other issues.
Turkey, which supports a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, has said it believes a rapprochement with Israel will also help find a solution, but will not abandon Palestinian commitments to better relations with Israel.
