Tsavousoglu sees Russia-Ukraine convergence on ‘critical issues’

Positive steps in the negotiations Russia and Ukraine is seen by the Turkish Foreign Minister, Mevlüt Tsavousoglutelling Hürriyet that the two countries are close to an agreement on “critical issues” and have almost agreed on certain issues.

Tsavousoglou also stated that hopes for a ceasefire if the parties do not back down from the progress they have made towards reaching an agreement.

In a statement to al Jazeera television, Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s advisor Ibrahim Kalin said that the two sides are approaching their positions on four key points and mentioned Moscow’s demand from Ukraine to abandon the prospect of NATO membership, demilitarization, what the Kremlin calls “de-Naziization” and the protection of the Russian language in Ukraine.

Both Ukraine and the West reject these Kremlin references to “neo-Nazis” as baseless propaganda. Moscow’s narrative concerns Ukraine’s democratically elected leadership. Erdogan’s adviser said such reports were offensive to Kyiv.

Kalin also stated that A permanent ceasefire could be reached after a meeting between Volodymyr Zelensky and Vladimir Putin.

But he added that Putin “considers” that positions on strategic issues such as Crimea and Donbass have not come close enough to hold such a meeting.
