Tsavousoglu: Talks continue with Taliban over Kabul airport

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoλουlu said on Sunday that talks with the Taliban on the operation of Kabul airport were still ongoing, Reuters reported.

Turkey has said it would be open to operating Kabul Hamid Karzai International Airport with Qatar following the Taliban occupation of Afghanistan in August, but only if its security demands are met.

Asked about the invitation of Taliban officials to the Antalya diplomatic tax weekend, Tsavusoglu told reporters that this does not mean that Ankara recognizes the Taliban leadership, but added that the interim government in Afghanistan should listen.

Tsavousoglu also said he hoped Russia would not take a negative stance during talks on reviving the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran, after Moscow’s last-minute request forced talks to be suspended.

Russia’s demands for guarantees to protect its trade with Iran following the blow to sanctions over its invasion of Ukraine risked the talks collapsing.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoλουlu also said he hoped progress could be made in evacuating Turks trapped in a mosque in Mariupol on Sunday and asked for help from his Russian counterpart, Reuters reported.

Ukraine’s foreign ministry said on Saturday that Russian forces had bombed a mosque where more than 80 adults and children, including Turkish citizens, had taken refuge.

However, Tsavousoglou said in a press conference at the forum that there was no damage to the mosque and that buses were waiting to evacuate the Turks, although no contact could be made at this time.
