Tsipras at the Observatory: I am very afraid that the necessary things for fire protection have not been done

The President of SYRIZA Progressive Alliance, Alexis Tsipras, visited today the National Observatory of Athens. During his visit, Mr. Tsipras was informed by the Director and President of the Observatory, Mr. Manolis Pleionis and the competent scientists of the Foundation and the Institutes about their models and forecasts in view of the firefighting period, as well as the proposals that have been made. submit to the government for prevention and adequate preparation of the state mechanism for fires.

After the meeting, Mr. Tsipras made the following statement to the press:

“I visited the National Observatory today and spoke with the heads of the institutes, scientists who have a complete picture of the phenomenon of the climate crisis, precisely because we are very concerned about the combination of the escalation of the climate crisis and the inadequacy of the state mechanism to follow this escalation and prepare in order to face the phenomena that we will have constantly in the next period ahead of us.

The climate crisis is and will be present. Which means we can not always be surprised.

This summer will be a difficult one and I’m very afraid that the necessary steps have not been taken to strengthen fire protection. In other words, there should be prevention and adequacy of the state mechanism in the difficult conditions that we will face this year as well.

The scientific community has made a number of critical proposals, as have we. And for the fire protection and for the prevention and for the adequacy of the state mechanism.

The crucial thing is for the government to listen to it as early as possible. Not after a holiday.

And even more crucial is to plan together with the scientific community. To plan the implementation of protection and prevention from these phenomena that we will constantly have in front of us in the next period. “We have to find a way to deal with them adequately.”
